4. Dialogs

This section describes selected dialogs used in kvoice.

4.1 Greeting messages

You can record your greeting message (the message wich is played, if your computer answers to an incoming call), by different means.

The first method is to record the message from the phone connected to your local phone line or from a microphone connected to your modem. To do so, set kvoice to use your telephone or the internal microphone or speaker (this can be done in options/setup/voice). Go to the voice/greeting message dialog. Record a new message with file/new, where you must enter the name of the new message, and press record.

The other method is using an existing sound file (.wav). Just pull it from kfm over to the voice/greeting message widget and drop it there. The greeting message will be converted to the modems internal format, and added to the list of messages.

Notes for different modems:

UMC:

Because UMC doesn't release their sound format, it is currently not possible, to convert sound files to the UMC format or vice versa. You will have to use the telephone line, or the modems internal speaker for recording and playing sound files.

Elsa:

The conversion programm does currently only accept .wav files with a sample rate of 7200Hz.

4.2 Show Queue This dialog will show the currently spooled faxes. kvoice will try tosend these faxes, if you choose the menu fax->send spooled fromthe main window. It is possible to delete fax messages you put onto the queue, byselecting it and pressing the delete button. Note, that this wll nlywork for fax messages you put onto the queue (unless you areroot). You will not be able to delete messages other people put ontothe queue.

4.3 New Fax

This widget let's you compose a fax. You can type a text into the edit widget and attach some files to it.

The sending of faxes is done, by spooling the composed faxes to faxspool (see man faxspool for further information), which is part of the mgetty package. This just places the faxes on a spool queue.

For the moment kvoice does not check, if the files you wan't to send are in a format faxspool can process. If you have ghostscript and tex installed, ps, dvi, and text files should work without any problems. Various image formats may work aswell.

Spooling the faxes will fail silently, if you try to process file types faxspool does not recognize. I'll try to change this in a future version of kvoice.

To automatically send them, you must either have faxrunqd running (by for example putting it into /etc/rc), or have an entry in your systems crontab (see man crontab) which calls faxrunq from time to time. Sending of the faxes can also be achieved by choosing fax/send spooled... in the menu of kvoice's main widget.

4.4 Setup dialog

The setup dialog let's you configure kvoice and m/vgetty. As some of the changes require kvoice to write to /etc/inittab and to the m/vgetty config files, these changes can only be done if you are running kvoice as root. You will always be asked for confirmation before kvoice actually writes to such a file.

I have tested these features as much as possible (but only on a linux system), but I will take no responsability if writing to one of these files screws up your system. If it does so, complain as much as you like, but please send me a big report, so I can fix the problem in a future release.

Here are now the actual configuration options of kvoice.

General

Here you can tell kvoice how often it should check, if new messages (voice of fax) have arrived. A value of 0 means never.

Modem

Modem device

Here you can set the device your modem is connected to.

Baud Rate

The baud rate for the connection between computer and modem.

modem Type

The type of modem you have. This is used for converting .wav files to the modems sound file format. If this is set incorrectly, your modem will not be able to play any imported greeting messages.

rings before answering

How long should m/vgetty wait before answering the phone.

You can also choose to which sort of incoming calls your modem will react.

Voice

Here you can select the in/output device kvoice will use for playing and recording voice messages. Telephone line means, you should be able to hear the message on a telephone connected in parallel to your modem.

beep frequency and beep length should be self explaining.

Fax

Up to now, you can enter here only your phone number.

Directories

Various directories kvoice needs. They should normally be autodetected the first time you start kvoice. If they weren't detected correctly, you can change them here. Note, that the voice and fax directories are relativ to the spool directory.
