The Preferences is accessible via the Preferences... option in the Gabber menu. It provides a central location for the user to customize various levels of the way Gabber behaves.
The Connection preferences tab shares information with the Login dialog to provide an always-available location to view options concerning the account and server that Gabber uses to connect. Note that this information can only be edited from the Login dialog.
The main window has several options to customize the appearance of functionality of the interface.
To toggle saving the size and position of the main window, simply select the desired option among the Size and Position options:
Save main window size.
Save main window position.
Besides being customized in location, toolbars on the main window can also be toggled on and off by the following options:
Display toolbar of commonly used actions.
Display status indicator.
To disable the status docklet on the GNOME panel, simply disable the Display status docklet option.
As noted before, the status of roster items is indicated by specific colors and icons. This tab allows customization of the colors and icons displayed on the roster.
To change the color associated with various status states, simply click the color to be changed and a standard GNOME color picker dialog will load. To choose a color, simply select a target area in the color wheel and select the specific shade from the vertical shade chart. The new color will be shown on the right side of the horizontal color box below the color wheel. More precise control of the color can be gained by using the sliders to the right of the color wheel.
Display of icons identifying a user's status on the roster may be disabled by the Display icons next to users indicating their status option.
The Messages tab allows the user to completely customize incoming and outgoing messages to fit their individual style. Messages configuration.
To specify the default format of sending a message to a user, Gabber provides two options:
Send normal messages by default.
Send one-on-one chats by default.
When receiving a message from other users, Gabber can be told to display messages in the exact method that the user wants. If the user does not specify, then it will display the message in the manner in which the sender specifies. The following options set the method in which Gabber will handle incoming messages:
Receive all messages as normal messages.
Receive all messages as one-on-one chats.
Certain types of incoming messages can be specified to automatically be opened, or they can be held waiting until the user accesses them via a roster item.
Automatically open normal messages.
Automatically open one-on-one chats.
