Announcing Pyrite, a comprehensive package of tools allowing access to
Palm Computing platform devices and their data from the Python
programming language. Formerly known as PalmPython, Pyrite provides a
high-level, object-oriented, extensible interface to data on and
related to a Palm Computing platform handheld, both on the local disk
and on the device. Pyrite is free software, available for use under
the GNU Library General Public License, v2.

This release adds new database selection logic to the Backup conduit,
preventing unnecessary multiple backups, and fixes a date related bug
that occurred on certain Unix platforms. The C module has been
cleaned up somewhat, which should improve compatibility with some
compilers.

The latest release of Pyrite can be downloaded from the URL shown
above. Also, a pre-packaged version for Debian GNU/Linux should soon
be available in the "unstable" distribution on all the usual mirrors.

Pyrite requires the Python language, version 1.5 or newer, and the
pilot-link library. Python is available at <http://www.python.org/>,
and pilot-link is at <ftp://ryeham.ee.ryerson.edu/pub/PalmOS/>.
