You are now viewing the ALT Linux 3.0 Compact distribution's homepage. The distribution is set up and ready to use. We hope that our work will be useful for you.
ALT Linux Developers Team
If you have not installed the distribution, but simply launched it from the TravelCD disk, you should remember that all changes you make take place in the operating memory only and will be lost when the computer is switched off. You should save those changes that you wish to keep onto one of the accessible external devices (a flash memory card, a hard drive, etc.). If you do not have TravelCD yet, it could be useful for you: it is sometimes quite handy to be able to work without modifying data on the hard drive.
First, look into the main menu. Most likely, you will find there everything you need for daily work: the Internet, the office, multimedia programs, etc. But the ALT Linux 3.0 Compact distribution also has many other things in it, especially if you have the extended DVD edition.
You can learn about viewing the list of available applications and about installing the ones you need from our documentation. It also includes information on setting up the system, about its structure, about the difference between Linux and ALT Linux and the origins of both. It will tell you about free software, which is mentioned in quite a lot of places here. You will also learn where that community of developers and users that is so interesting and useful to get to know is located.
