About Synaptic Package Manager

Introduction

The software on your system is organizied in so called packages. The Synaptic Package Manager is a graphical frontend to the apt package management system. It allows you to perform all actions of the command line tool apt-get in a graphical environment.

Synaptic Package Manager provides the following main features:

  • Install, remove, configure, upgrade and downgrade single and multiple packages.

  • Upgrade your whole system.

  • Manage package repositories.

  • Search the list of known packages by name, description and other package properties.

  • Filter the list of shown packages by status, section, properties or tag.

  • Arrange listed packages by initial letter, status or tag.

  • View all available online documentation related to a package.

Note

Root rights are required to apply changes to the package system.

You can start Synaptic Package Manager in the following ways:

GNOME Applications menu

Choose System Tools->Software.

KDE menu

Choose Settings->Software.

Command line

To start Synaptic Package Manager from a command line type the following , then press Return:

synaptic

Caution

You can render your system unusable.

Always use Synaptic Package Manager with care.
