I want to drive !
Here is the manual for the players who want to drive in TORCS 1.2.x.
First of all you should install and run TORCS, for that see the installation manual.
After that you can drive a car with a joystick or a steering wheel, or the mouse or keyboard.
In order to know if TORCS have recognized your joystick, go to the OPTIONS menu.
If you can select the Joystick:
then, bingo your joystick is working and you will be able to feel the speed...
else your joystick is not recognized, see the joystick driver site in the Links section
for more information on how you can have your joystick work under Linux. (see also Linux Gamers FAQ).
If you do not have a joystick Go to the Keyboard/Mouse configuration.
Configuring the joystick
The joystick configuration allows you to choose the joystick buttons associated with the actions:
The manual gear selection is used with devices like "RS shifter".
The sequential selection is the common gear up/down selection.
The Throttle and Brake selection is to be used ONLY if you do not want
to use the joystick axis for that.
Click on the command to change:
Then choose the command for the function:
The Next screen allows you to calibrate the joystick, just follow the instructions
and save when finished:
Configuring the Keyboard/Mouse
The Keyboard/Mouse configuration allows you to choose the way you want to drive:
To select mouse axis, just move the mouse when the command is selected.
The Steer Sensibility is used for keyboard and mouse, but the Steer Dead Zone is used only for the mouse driving, it is expressed in percentage of the screen.
The Next screen allows you to calibrate the mouse, just follow the instructions
and save when finished:
Choosing your car
Let's go to the Player's configuration screen:
when entering the screen you'll find a list of drivers.
click on an empty slot and enter your name:
Then select your car, Transmission and the number of Pit Stops you have planned.
The initial fuel amount depends on the number of pit stops choosen.
The Level modify the damages and the tires adherence.
The Auto Reverse engages automaticaly the reverse gear when the car is stopped and you continue to apply brakes.
Then accept the modifications (you can cancel by pressing escape).
Good, now that you have choosen a car, you can go racing...
Racing
Go to the racing menu:
Select one of the type of race:
Configure it:
Select the track:
Select the drivers:
Deselect the default driver:
Now Select Your driver:
You can change the order:
Save the parameters:
Configure the race length:
Gentlemen Start Your Engine
Launch the race:
Press F2 to cycle through the driver views:
Press F1 to get the help about all the commands:
Now drive as fast as you can...
