A typical KDE desktop consists of three areas:
The desktop, on which frequently used files and folders may be placed.
A panel (now called the kicker) across the bottom of the screen which is used to start applications and switch between desktops.
A taskbar which is now incorporated into the kicker to switch between currently running applications.
